Why free bets exist — and why hedging changes the math
Sportsbooks use signup promos the same way banks use account bonuses: pay to acquire customers, then earn it back over time. The standard industry model assumes most bettors will not hedge — they will recycle bonus bets into more wagers at roughly -110 hold lines, parlays, and live betting where the book keeps long-run edge.
Matched betting treats the offer like a coupon: place the required bet at one book, place the opposite bet at another book, and you are no longer gambling on who wins the game. You usually lose a little on step one, then turn most of the free bet into cash on step two.
The book's model versus your model
| Sportsbook assumption | Promo-aware approach |
|---|---|
| Free bet keeps you on their app | Free bet is an asset to convert, then move on |
| Recreational bettor loses to vig over time | Hedge both outcomes to shrink variance |
| Bonus bets used on anything | Free bets used on big underdogs to maximize cash back |
| One account, one platform | Line shop across licensed books in your state |
Stacking signup promos across apps
Where multiple books operate in your state, you can repeat the same basic process on different new-customer offers — one account per brand:
- FanDuel + DraftKings: Two of the largest United States sportsbooks, often with similar bet-and-get structures — use the Qualifying Bet and Bonus Bet calculators to size hedges
- Caesars or BetMGM: Next signup — use whichever app posted the better opposite line that day to balance the qualifying bet
- BetRivers, Fanatics, Bally Bet, Resorts World Bet, theScore Bet: Each has its own new-user terms; some use bonus bets, site credit, or second-chance bets
- Odds boosts: FanDuel or DraftKings daily boosts — boosted side at one app, standard line at another; watch maximum bet limits
Related brands may share eligibility rules — confirm in each app’s terms. Use the Promo Terms Risk Checklist before staking.
